Focusing on the cut-outs and cut-ups of Hans Christian Andersen and William Seward Burroughs, Cut-Outs and Cut-Ups: Hans Christian Andersen and William Seward Burroughs is the first exhibition to compare these legendary writers and fascinating, but little-known, visual artists. Hailing from different origins and different periods, Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) and William Seward Burroughs (1914-1997) nevertheless shared many significant connections. Both were highly productive and revolutionary writers, intrepid travelers and larger-than-life personalities who developed important collaborative relationships. They were visionaries, who had a deep and long engagement with the visual arts.
Though Andersen and Burroughs are known largely for their literary masterpieces, their visual work, has to date received little exposure. Key to the 124 works in this exhibition is the artists’ mutual engagement with cutting-out pictures and stencils which involve silhouettes and shadows. Their use of brilliant colours and metallic surfaces relate closely to their writings. The Andersen material consists of a wide range of drawings, cut-outs and picture books containing his original collages. The Burroughs artworks include paintings on paper and wood, collaborative projects with lifelong friend, the artist Brion Gysin – these include pages for The Third Mind, 1978, as well as their legendary Dreamachine.
Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark, in 1805, the son of a washerwoman and a shoemaker. At the age of 14 he moved to Copenhagen to pursue an acting career. Between 1822 and 1827 he attended the Slagelse and Helsingør Grammer Schools. Throughout his life he wrote a number of plays and travel books inspired by his ongoing travels in Europe, and is best known for his popular fairytales such as The Little Mermaid, The Red Shoes and The Ugly Duckling. The majority of his visual works, including the picture books, date from the 1850s to his death in Copenhagen in 1875. William Seward Burroughs was born in 1914 in St Louis to a wealthy family. He studied at Harvard and travelled to Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Morocco between 1945 and 1950. Appropriating the cut-up technique developed by Gysin in the 1950s, Burroughs produced some of his most influential writings, extending the language first developed in his groundbreaking novel Naked Lunch, 1959. While living in Paris, London, New York and Lawrence, Kansas - where he died in 1997 - Burroughs never stopped experimenting with writing, film, sound and visual art.
The exhibition is curated by Hendel Teicher, independent curator and art historian.
A fully-illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition. Contributors include notable Andersen and Burroughs scholars Jens Andersen, Francine Prose, Raymond Foye and José Ferez Kuri. The catalogue also includes texts by Hans Christian Andersen and William Seward Burroughs, an essay by Hendel Teicher and a foreword by Enrique Juncosa, Director, IMMA.

Can't describe this one. And that's a sure sign of dopeness. I don't know what it is or how they do it but The Whirling Dervish have converted me to their brand of rock, er emo, er um punk....geeze I don't know. Definitely socially driven in their song making the drums and guitars fuse together in a wall of song that comes at you in a hectic, aggressive and harmonious barrage of sounds that ebbs and swells in all the unexpected places that make that make their music hard to define but for sure easy to fall for. All of this is punctuated by earnest vocals that exude an intangible energy.

Today, Lebanon is witnessing one of its tensest political divisions, and failed to elect a president able to bridge the gap between the current government and the opposition. The impact between the Middle East conflict, the media system and art is raised by Mbarkho from the geographical and the historical angles."

William Burroughs Master Musicians Of Joujouka Brion Gysin Hans Christian Andersen Opening
Today the show of Cut Up works by William Seward Burroughs and Hans Christian Anderson opened in Dublin, Ireland. One of the exhibits is the Brion Gysin and Ian Sommerville "Dreamachine" courtesy of the The Musée d' Art moderne de la Ville de Paris.
The soundtrack for this experience is the Master Musicians of Joujouka's 1995 release Joujoujka Black Eyes. This Dreamachine is one of nine created by Gysin and Sommerville.
The Master Musicians of Joujouka are proud to be associated with this exibition.

Thanks for your help with the feature-length film "William S. Burroughs: A Man Within." We have wonderful interviews with almost everyone involved in his life. As production nears completion, I am now searching out media to include in the film. I am looking for photographs, audio and video/film footage of William S. Burroughs. If you or someone you know has anything that you could generously let me use in the film, it would be much appreciated.So many of you have helped out.

Trois militants soupçonnés d’appartenir à une organisation terroriste irlandaise sont arrêtés à l’initiative du groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale le GIGN avec le…celui qui sera donc Préfet PROUTEAU et le capitaine BARRIL…
Et …le commandant BEAU, puisque c’est son nom, le commandant Jean-Michel BEAU, va être choisi, au fond, comme mêlé à cette affaire, il en ignore tout les dessous et il va être choisi comme bouc émissaire puisqu’il s’avère que cette affaire, en effet, est un montage, en terme de communication, par des gendarmes qui sont placés au cœur du pouvoir c’est à dire , en fait, autour de la présidence de la République.
Ce livre c’est le récit, presque heure par heure, jour par jour en tous cas, de ce qui s’est passé entre 1982 et janvier 2008. C’est à dire tous les efforts, passionnés, passionnels, obsessionnels, conduits par Jean-Michel BEAU pour rétablir la Vérité.

Download the cassette only release from Staaltape Opp records. The original came in a wooden box along with a cassette of Brion Gysin and book Back in No Time by Hafler Trio's Andrew McKenzie.This recording was made during the huge tour the musicians undertook in 1980. In 1969, JOHN HARRIS cofounded the Venice Poetry Workshop at Beyond Baroquewith Joseph Hansen. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was the proprietor of PapaBach Books, the historic literary center where a generation of Los Angelespoets artistically came of age.
SARIA IDANA hails from Woodstock, NY and has studied with such distinguishedpoets as Martin Espada, Deborah Gorlin, Robert Cole and Phillip Shabaaz. Shehas been influenced by a wide range of writers from beat poets andcontemporary spoken word artists to Sufi mystics as well as her ownextensive world travels. She works with F.L.O.W., a poetry program forincarcerated youth.

The Icelandic novelist Olafur Gunnarsson, author of some 20 books and translator of Kerouac lives on a small farm four miles out of Reykjavik. The farm is called Stora-Klopp which translates into Big - Rock.

Présentée à l'origine sous forme d'un DVD-rom, l'oeuvre a été réactualisée sous la forme d'un blog, où elle trouve une nouvelle autonomie…

Né en 1971. Vit et travaille à Nantes. Etudes à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Rennes de 1995 à 2000 puis au Fresnoy, Studio National des arts contemporains de 2000 à 2002.
Médium utilisé : vidéo, film et nouveaux médias. Mon travail explore les différents modes narratifs (ou non) avec les moyens inadéquats des images et des sons.
Intuitivement influencé par la littérature et profondément attaché à la réalité, c'est une sensibilité au monde qui est proposée, et rien d'autre.

I think it started when I was a kid. I had a mildinterest in sports. I was amazed to find out thatinnings get added to a baseball game when there is atie. But what was really amazing was that they keepadding them on until there's a winner. The thought ofa game lasting a few days was great. I thought itwould be really cool if the game lasted a year. Andwhat if the game lasted several years? I had a visionof all these baseball players running around inweathered uniforms and long white beards. Now thatwould be something; to continue a game for the rest ofyour life.
MB 89 is an attempt for me to play a continuous piece of music that spans the greater part of my life. Unlike a composition with a discrete beginning andending that may be played over and over, MB 89 is acomposition played once, continuously; spaces betweenperformances are to be treated as musical rests. Instead of many starts and finishes there is constantmusic. Thus MB 89 is a reference point in myever-changing life.
MB 89 is not to be merely conceived, written, andperformed. Rather, I have just realized MB 89'spresence in my life and have decided to acknowledgeit. It will be an ongoing endeavor for the rest of mylife.
The first MB 89 performance was a series of live radiobroadcasts on the UMASS radio station WMUA. MikeBurke DJ extraordinaire was a neighbor of mine when Ifirst moved to Northampton. We quickly became friendsdue to our late night talks about music. So everyThursday in August 1997 MB 89 was broadcasted fromMike Burke's radio show.
Since then, the presentation of MB 89 has evolved intoa timeless environment for people to enter and exit atwill. The concept for this installation is to createa space of subtle movement where people can be part ofthe environment and absorb MB 89 any way they like.
A Cylindrical mass of metal and fabric will stand inthe room from within the cylinder will be a BassClarinet generating a drone with electronics. Lightswill accompany the drone. The glow of the blue lightsconstantly change over time, transforming the room. Subtle color fills the space and changes with themusic. Participants are encouraged to experience thepiece from different points in the room.
The performance is presented in 4-hour increments andis designed for the audience to come and go as theyplease. It is best to find space in the room and bewith the piece for a while, leave and then come back.

Et c’est aussi le titre d’un live du groupe, en 2000. " Persistence is all ", sentence à la fois définitive et mystérieuse, ne signifie peut-être rien d’autre que la nécessité d’être tenace et exigeant, ou plus directement encore, de résister au suicide programmé des objets dans la culture commerciale. The exhibition is precisely marked under the symbol of Coil: its short title taken from a neon sign (a sculpture ?) situated in the living room of Threshold house, the home of the group, which we can be seen in the English documentary, Hello Culture (2001). It is also the title of a live by Coil (2000). Quelques (bonnes) nouvelles:
1. Le film de Isaak Julien consacré à Derek Jarman a obtenu le Prix spécial du Jury des Teddies à la Berlinale 2008... Occasion de rappeler le magnifique Chroma. Un livre de couleurs, paru à l’éclat en 2003, dans la plus grande indifférence des médias, dont une version lyber est disponible sur le site et le Wittgenstein, tiré du film, tiré de l’oeuvre, tirée du cerveau de Wittgenstein lui-même (qui ne doit rien à personne).
2. Patricia Farazzi vient de recevoir le Prix du Ministère italien des Affaires étrangères pour sa traduction du livre de Sergio Bettini, Venise naissance d’une ville, paru l’année dernière. Livre labyrinthe, à l’image de la ville, et dont la langue suit le cours capricieux des canaux...
Et l’éclat sera présent aux Rencontres du livre de Sciences humaines, les 22, 23 et 24 février à l’Espace Blancs-Manteaux. Détail sur le site des éditions ou sur <http://www.salonshs.msh-paris.fr>. Les éditions seront représentées par la Librairie Tschann http://www.tschann.fr/>

We've just launched a new blog investigating topics such as the use of social networks to promote your art, getting well-ranked in search engines, ways to make a living from your music in the age of free mp3s (without aping the idiocy of the RIAA), self-publishing of written work, micropayment systems, understanding how the long tail helps you and related topics.
It's written from the point of view of artists and creators who don’t have a budget (as opposed to similar blogs aimed at companies with vast IT budgets and a team of web developers!).
I can’t promise to provide all the answers (but maybe you can - comments are enabled on the blog), but I hope to try. I’m going to be drawing from my ongoing practice as an artist along with my day job (managing a web team for an international publishing company - I’ve worked as a professional web developer for the past 12 years).

Il a publié en France Soljenitsyne, Burroughs et Salman Rushdie. Christian Bourgois est décédé ce jeudi 20 décembre des suites d'un cancer.
Enfant de la bourgeoisie d'Antibes, Christian Bourgois rêve d'intégrer Normale-Sup, mais son père s'y oppose, considérant l'école comme un nid de gauchistes. Bourgois ira à Science-Po et en sortira second de sa promo (devant Jacques Chirac); puis, il entrera à l'ENA... qu'il quitte au bout d'un an. Il peut alors donner libre cours à sa passion des livres et, dès 1959, travaille comme éditeur aux côtés de René Julliard. Il devient l'un des éditeurs les plus réputés de France.
Editant sans comité de lecture ni d'autre directeur littéraire que lui-même, il fait découvrir en France Fernando Arrabal, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Antonio Lobo Antunes, Jim Harrison, Boris Vian, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Ezra Pound, Bob Dylan, Toni Morrison (prix Nobel), Salman Rushdie, Susan Sontag et les principales figures de la Beat Generation.

Quelle est votre recette, Christian Bourgois, pour avoir réussi à publier tant de talents ?
Ma recette, c'est mon bon plaisir! Je joue sur les mots mais j'ai toujours publié des livres pour mon propre plaisir. Il y a une phrase de Borgès que j'aime beaucoup : « J'écris pour ma femme, pour quelques amis, et pour adoucir l'usure du temps ».
Vous restez un passionné de la littérature-monde ?
C'est vrai que la littérature française contemporaine m'excite, m'intéresse, et me plaît moins que les littératures étrangères d'auteurs encore inconnus ou peu connus. Je n'ai aucun mépris à l'égard de ces auteurs français, simplement, à propos d'un auteur dont on parle quand même énormément comme Houellebecq, je me dis que je n'appartiens pas au même monde... Quand je parle de monde, je parle de monde littéraire bien sûr. Ce qui m'intéresse chez Houellebecq, c'est les efforts qu'il fait pour se débarrasser de tout ce qui est pour moi la fiction, l'épaisseur romanesque, le charme... Pour moi, cet univers de clones et de tourisme sexuel, c'est un univers qui ne m'intéresse pas un instant. Ce sont des livres qui me tombent des mains.
Il vous a fallu par ailleurs un certain courage pour publier Les Versets sataniques de Salman Rushdie.
J'ai publié Les Versets Sataniques parce que j'avais signé un contrat avec un auteur que je ne connaissais pas. Les menaces étaient à la fois très précises et très imprécises, très quotidiennes, et, j'ose le dire maintenant, pour moi complètement surréalistes par certains côtés. Je suis l'homme le plus agnostique du monde, je ne savais même pas ce que voulait dire le mot fatwa... Je me suis dis que si je ne publiais pas les Versets Sataniques, j'avais une bonne raison: je mettais en cause la sécurité et la vie de ma famille et de mon entourage. Sauf qu'à ce moment là, soit je publiais les Versets Sataniques, soit j'arrêtais de faire de l'édition...
Vous êtes passionné par la littérature étrangère, et en même temps vous n'avez pas vraiment un comportement de nomade.
Publier des livres, c'est écouter des voix, c'est découvrir des voix. Je me suis intéressé à des écrivains comme William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, ou Jack Kérouac, et j'ai quand même publié plusieurs livres alors que je n'étais fasciné ni par leur homosexualité, ni par l'usage qu'ils faisaient de certaines substances plus ou moins interdites, ni par leur passion pour la route, pour le voyage. Ce qui m'a intéressé, c'était la voix de Ginsberg, la voix de Burroughs, la voix de Kérouac. Je ne sais pas conduire, je suis allé à New-York pour la première fois à l'âge de 50 ans!
