Interzone report: June-July 2012


Hi all,

15th anniversary of Interzone

William Burroughs passed away on August 2nd 1997, 15 years ago, and August 2012 is the 15th anniversary of Interzone, which started some days after (see at http://www.inter-zone.org/presentation.html).

Summer is the season for Interzone meetings :

- I had the visit of Philip Beitchman, in holidays in France. We had already met twice, with his friend Lionel Bloom, first in Coulanges  (Jan. 2003) and Thouars in July 2005 (see the report at http://www.interpc.fr/mapage/westernlands/reportjuly05.html ).
His stay was too short, as it's always a pleasure to meet in the flesh people who joined to Interzone since the very beginning and contributed to make this network what it has become.

- Last week José Altimiras and his family came for the animation "En ces lieux... le livre" which will took place in Loudun on July 28th (see below).
Literature
Interzone Editions  http://www.interzoneeditions.net/ was part of the animation organized on July 28th in Loudun by the independant association "Cutivons le livre". José Altimiras, the illustrator of "Le Taxidermiste", came for the occasion from Perpignan. We presented the books , and a dreamachine. Jérôme Pintoux, the author of "Interviews d'Outre-Tombe", was also present. (see the articles in Interzone News and Bienvenue à Interzone ).

I have spoken over time about  the loss of my Russian poet and photographer friend, Aleksey Dayey, who died in his thirties from food poisoning, after having beaten cancer only month earlier.
Terry Clark, a singer-songwriter from the UK, posted information on him on his web site.  Aleksey was coming to SF to film a documentary on my life, and Terry wrote three songs for the movie.

Christophe Brosset.
During the night of latest June 13-14 ans, Christophe Brosset passed away. The Ateliers musicaux Syrinx pay a tribute to this « veluable man, a great musician and artist who lived through and for Music ». He was a trained guitarist and pianoist, and practiced all styles. As a musician, he participated to the creation of many groups in Poitou in the eitghties as « Oye como va », « les 4 Vindis », « Clé ». With his brother Jérôme, a drummer, he wins many prices among which the Concours national jazz de la Défense with their group  « Cîmagil ».
As a composer, he produced many pieces of work. Parallely he taught piano-jazz at à Syrinx since 1988 and rules a worshop : the little Big Band. He also expressed himself through painting. A part of his works is presently exposed in Montmorillon at the « Palais du Papier » until July 1st.

The line between the life of AD Winans and his poetry is a fine one. To Winans himself, it doesn't exist.
"My poems and my life are one and the same," said the San Francisco-born Winans, 75. "They simply can't be separated."
Raised in the Haight-Ashbury and Glen Park, where he lives, Winans served in the Air Force, stationed in Panama, from 1956 to '58, where he "became disillusioned with the American system." By the time he returned, North Beach had become ground zero for the Beat Generation, and Winans embraced the bohemian lifestyle.
Over the ensuing decades, he walked the streets of the city and captured what he saw and felt in more than 50 books of poetry. His devastating snapshots document the indelible heart of an inconstant place and form a stunning portrait in the new collection "San Francisco Poems" (Little Red Tree).
The book follows the 2010 release of Winans' selected life works, "Drowning Like Li Po in a River of Red Wine" (Bottle of Smoke).
Until the late '80s, Winans spent much of his time in North Beach, where poets Bob Kaufman and Jack Micheline became role models and long-lasting friends. When Kaufman broke his 10-year vow of silence, which lasted from John F. Kennedy's assassination to the end of the Vietnam War, with "a half-hour nonstop recitation of poems" at Specs' bar, Winans was so affected he skipped the after-party to write a tribute to his friend on bar napkins. The poem was framed outside Specs' and remained there for more than 15 years.

Working to write

In the '60s, as hippies flocked to Winans' childhood neighborhood, the poet slogged through a number of jobs to enable him to keep writing. He worked the late-night shift at the post office, as a juvenile probation officer, as a security guard at St. Francis Hospital and as an equal-opportunity specialist for the U.S. Department of Education. He often left these jobs feeling disgruntled, and eventually quit working to write full time.
In 1972 he started publishing the Second Coming Press, which evolved into a regular, perfect-bound journal and then a publishing house that put out more than 25 books. Of note was the ambitious and acclaimed "California Bicentennial Poet's Anthology." The journal's second issue was devoted to Charles Bukowski, who had yet to achieve mainstream popularity. Bukowski and Winans became friends and enjoyed a regular correspondence for 17 years. More than 80 of their letters are housed at Brown University with the rest of Winans' archives. His memoir, "Holy Grail: Charles Bukowski & the Second Coming Revolution," was published in 2002.

'In search of his soul'

It was a year after he started the press that Winans quit his government work, which enabled him to land a coveted job as editor-writer at the San Francisco Arts Commission in 1975 - a gig that would last five years. This gave Winans enough time and energy to focus on his own writing while expanding the press. His book "North Beach Poems" was published in '77, and in 1980 he organized the three-county, seven-day Second Coming Music and Poetry Festival to honor poet and critic Josephine Miles and blues musician John Lee Hooker.
Often classified as Beat because he was there, and Meat because he talks about "the meat-and-potato issues of the day" in straightforward, conversational language, Winans defies categorization. His creative process mirrors his nonconformist behavior: "I never sit down with any set intent on how it's going to come out," he said of his poetry.
His work is a record, as Micheline once said, of "a man in search of his soul," and his poetry often focuses on the homeless, the lost and those left by the side of the road by various cultural movements Winans has lived through.
Since 1995, Winans has enjoyed a daily routine of coffee and a newspaper, a few hours writing at the computer, a walk to the post office and around the neighborhood, and a few more hours writing and listening to jazz records before going to bed and starting all over again.
"That's what life is pretty much about," he wrote. "The growing up, the learning, the wild years, the mellowing, the settling into a routine, and then one day it's over."

Taking an easier pace

Lately, Winans has begun to take things easier. As he sat outside a packed XO Cafe, there was a gleam in the poet's eye as he talked about his body of work. With "San Francisco Poems" just out and a forthcoming collection of political poems by New York Quarterly, almost all of his poems will have been published.
"I'd be happy doing twelve poems a year," he said as the J line rumbled past. "I'd be happy just working on what I have left to get out, and then I'll feel like I've left a good body behind. No driving need to have to produce - if something happens, it happens."

Dans la nuit du 13 au 14 juin dernier, Christophe Brosset décédait. Les Ateliers musicaux Syrinx rendent hommage « à cet homme de valeur, grand musicien mais aussi artiste peintre qui vivait par et pour la Musique ». Guitariste de formation et pianiste, il pratiquait tous les styles. Musicien, il a participé à la création de nombreux groupes poitevins dans les années quatre-vingt comme « Oye como va », « les 4 Vindis », « Clé ». C'est avec son frère Jérôme, batteur, qu'il remporte de nombreux accessits dont le Concours national jazz de la Défense avec leur groupe « Cîmagil ».
Compositeur, il a produit beaucoup d'œuvres. Il enseigne parallèlement le piano-jazz à Syrinx depuis 1988 et encadre un atelier : le little Big Band. La peinture est son autre moyen d'expression. Une partie de ses œuvres est exposée en ce moment à Montmorillon au « Palais du Papier » jusqu'au 1er juillet.

Une nouvelle association loudunaise a décidé de s’impliquer dans la promotion du livre. Dès cet été une première animation née d’un concept original.

Avec l'arrivée d'Internet, les livres pourraient être victimes d'un certain désintérêt, des Loudunais se sont réunis pour préserver ce patrimoine et en faire la promotion. « Cultivons le livre » est une association qui a donc vu le jour en avril, et qui a pour objet d'organiser des animations littéraires, de promouvoir sous toutes ses formes le livre, la lecture du livre et la filière du livre.
On retrouve à sa tête Jacky Grivault qui a voulu créer cette association dans un but bien précis, proposer une animation avec un concept tout à fait original. « C'est une idée que j'avais depuis 3 ou 4 ans, je voulais faire quelque chose qui ne ressemble pas à un salon. Puis j'ai échangé des idées, les choses ont mûri et maintenant, il faut se lancer. » Et c'est samedi 28 juillet que l'association lancera « En ces lieux… des livres. » L'idée est simple, des auteurs, des éditeurs, des acteurs du livre, essentiellement de la région seront invités à s'exposer, toute une journée, chez des particuliers devenus des « ouvreurs de porte ». En effet, ceux-ci acceptent d'ouvrir leur cour, leur jardin, leur porche au public qui viendra échanger, acheter ou faire dédicacer un livre.
« Nous voulons créer un événement littéraire annuel par le livre, pour le livre et qui permet de découvrir Loudun et des lieux singuliers dans la ville. » A ce jour, une dizaine « d'ouvreurs de porte » ont répondu favorablement à cette belle idée. « C'est une idée très séduisante, car la ville est fermée, la région Poitou-Charentes est une région de murs, il y existe de nombreux porches et les gens sont contents quand ils sont ouverts, cela permet de découvrir les richesses du patrimoine et associées au livre, qui est très menacé, c'est un concept vraiment très original », expliquent-ils.

« Leur adhésion a été immédiate dès que nous avons soumis l'idée », souligne Jacky Grivault qui tient avant tout que ce moment de convivialité ne soit pas éphèmère et ce n'est pas qu'une idée en l'air puisque l'association travaille déjà sur l'édition 2013.

Quelques nouvelles de l'éclat

Bonjour,

A la suite du portrait du philosophe Massimo Cacciari (par Robert Maggiori), et d’un article de Cacciari sur «l’idéal de l’Empire», parus dans Libération de vendredi, nous avons mis en ligne un autre article récent du même sur “l’Allemagne et l’Europe”.
