Paul O'Donovan : "The rebirth of Ra-Atum-Khepri, occurring during an Interzone Coffee-break T.V. commercial, causing a partial eclipse over the Westernlands."

Hi all,

Summer news: a number of anniversaries , festivals, and the twelfth anniversary of Interzone. I delayed the sending of this report hoping I could finish the compilation of "The Time of the Naguals" before, but there is so much to include in it that it came out it was impossible.

12th anniversary of Interzone

Interzone started 12 years ago, on August 10 th 1997, some days after Burroughs passed away on August 2nd. Zoners who live in the same area can get in touch through the Interzone Coffee House at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theinterzonecoffeehouse/ and fix an appointment at the date and place they choose.

For virtual meetings, If a physical meeting is going on somewhere, it can be linked through computer with a meeting on the net in a chat at the same time, and a video chat would allow us to get in touch wherever we are in the world. Jim suggests to use Stickham free video chat at http://www.stickam.com/chatRoom.do I am creating a chat room there called "Interzone".

To use it, you must see the page at http://www.stickam.com/howto/index.do to connect with your video system.

For those who do not use a web cam, they can also use the plain chat of the forum Interzone at http://interzone.forumotion.com/ , but you have to join first and log in to access to the chat-room.

"The Time of the Naguals" : articles, poems, cut-ups and theater :

The contents :

Last month the tome with the articles was on line at http://aubert.isa.googlepages.com/articlescontents.htm . This tome has been modified: the "Fiction" part has been suppressed to be included in the tome of the short stories, and the research has been added : mainly on detoxification, dreams and non-Aristotelian economy. It contains 172 pages at the moment, but I shall add more texts. The research on dreamachine has to be added too, so as the research part by itself is a big piece, it might end to become gathered in a research tome. The contents of the poems is at http://aubert.isa.googlepages.com/poemscontents.htmAt the moment, it contains 163 pages, but I must improve the presentation and want to add some illustrations, so it will probably be bigger. The tome of cut-ups contains 80 pages at the moment, but illustrations also have to be added. The contents is on line at http://aubert.isa.googlepages.com/cutupscontents.htmThe tome of theater plays, 63 pages, is finished. See the contents at http://aubert.isa.googlepages.com/theatercontents.htmThe tome of short stories has to be ended, but the most of the work is done. I should be ready very soon.I am gathering each tome in a Open Office file, then converted in pdf. Have a look at those pages of contents if you are the author of a text. If you want to change anything, let me know now before the definitive version. If you want to revise the writing, or reread it, and have lost it, I can send it to you for you to correct it. If you sent texts which I have forgotten, please let me know and send them. I'll add them to the whole. When I started this compilation, I thought it would have been finished sooner, but the whole reveals itself as a huge work !!!!!!!!!!! It gives an idea of the Zone's spirit and work at different levels, and is the result of experiments of Burroughs' and Gysin's researches realized by an international group of some hundreds of people in twelve years.

Beside the writings, I shall add to this compilation the CD of music : "Interzone compilation I", which was gathered by Paul Sinclair in the early 2000. It was on line some years ago and then disapeared from the net, so the only Zoners who have it are the ones who were part of it then, about 15 people including Paul Sinclair and me.

There also are the paintings and illustrations. A part of them are illustrating the different tomes of the writings, but there are so many than they would deserve another CD by themselves.

So this is a rough map of the work done until now.

Publication and sale:

The other important point is the publication: I foresee to make it through Interzone Editions http://www.inter-zone.org/editions.htm, on CD, because it's not possible to print the different tomes as books with the home-made way I use. So we must see the price of it, knowing that for the people who were part of them, the cost will be limited to the price of the CD and post fees if they want it on a CD, or transmitted through a mail in pdf files, for free.

For the other people out of Interzone, we shall have to determine a price, and as it is a collective work, see together what to do with the money which will come from it. You can refer to the articles written on a non-Aristotelian economy :

I New data on money: what are we talking about exactly? : http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/9445/gsmoney.html

V. Académie 23: january 2004 : http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/9445/gsmoney5.html

Festivals :

Naked Luch festival

In Paris

The big event since the latest report has been the Naked Lunch festival organized by Oliver Harris and Ian MacFadyen in Paris for the 50th anniversary of the 1959 publication of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch from July 1st to 3. I could not go there, but you can see photos and videos on the event in the site http://nakedlunch.org/ at http://nakedlunch.org/events/paris/documents/, the Photographs and Coverage by Frank Rynne at http://brianjonesjoujoukafestival.blogspot.com/2009/07/burroughs-naked-lunch-50th-in-paris.html and http://brianjonesjoujoukafestival.blogspot.com/2009/07/naked-lunch-50th-anniversary-and.html and article by the Agence France Presse at http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jCAhQuduSMQr33sPNEp609O2JDwQ

Thing Two: on the website at http://nakedlunch.org/events/paris/documents/ you'll find a series of videos and photographs documenting the Paris anniversary events, to which you're welcome to make additions (contact: http://www.blogger.com/keith@supervert.com ). The website will continue to be regularly updated - with press coverage http://nakedlunch.org/press/ and anniversary event news, feature articles, etc. - so do keep checking in. Thing Three - As well as upcoming anniversary events in Lawrence, Kansas (August), London (September), New York (October), and San Francisco (November), we already know of further anniversary events planned for Chicago (August) and Bristol (September). Interzone news' blog

I had started this blog at http://interzonenews.wordpress.com/ in May to host the Zone's news instead of blogspot, after Interzone news had suddenly disappeared, due to a mad robot. But as the site came back after I complained, I am back to it and I am using Interzone news' blog at wordpress to host news not related to Interzone. I shall jump into it again for the Zone news in case blogspot would collapse again.

Warning: Geocities closing :

As Zoners who have a free site in Geocities probably know, they are closing on OCTOBER 26, 2009, so the free sites will be suppressed, unless we pay to keep them on line. See at http://geocities.yahoo.com/ about it.So if you do not want to pay, you can have your site saved in Internet archives way back machine at http://www.archive.org/web/web.php . Joujouka : More on the story .....

Mallim Ali Abdeslam El Attar at The Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival, Joujouka , Morocco, 29 July 2008.

The oldest musician in Joujouka is Mallim Ali Abdeslam El Attar. Mallim is the name given to a true master of music and Mallim Ali is known as the Master of Joujouka to all. He is the oldest musician from Joujouka and the oldest Attar in the village.

Master Musicians of Jajouka/Joujouka tour booklet 1980. The tour was organised
by Rikki Stein a true friend to the Master Musicians.Mallim Ali top photo on left

Last year he presided over the Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival in Joujouka as he did at this year's festival in June. The reverence shown to him by the Masters is evident when they arrive at the musician's house in Joujouka. His presence is always something to be appreciated as a blessing. He is the spiritual leader of the musicians by virtue of his age, his wisdom and his adherence to the saint, Sidi Ahmed Scheich, whose blessings he attributes his longevity to.

At nearly 100 year of age Mallim Ali has had a hard life. In 1936 he was conscripted by General Franco into the Spanish colonial army and was forced to fight in all the battles in the Spanish Civil War. This was an experience that many his generation of Sufi masters in Joujouka endured. He was retained in Spain until the end of World War II and then returned to his native Morocco without pay or pension.

From 1945 onwards he continued to play with The Master Musicians of Joujouka and was a veteran of Hamri's efforts to support the village by bringing the musicians to play on the trains between Ksar El kebir and Tangier, in the International Zone. This was the Interzone of William Burrough's fiction. In the 1950s he played at Brion Gysin and Hamri's restaurant, the 1001 nights in Tangier. This is where William Burroughs first saw the Master Musicians perform. He recalls his playing for Brian Jones with humorous glee. However a sadness also descends on Mallim Ali when he recalls those days to people. He always insists on naming the great masters who played with him who are now dead.

Last year, award winning rock photographer, Jill Furmanovsky, made a series of portraits of Mallim Ali which were published in the Onelife magazine. Other photographs by Jill of the Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival in Joujouka have appeared in The Guardian, Dazed and Confused and Mojo . The festival was celebration by the village of jaoujouka/Joujouka of brian Jones visit to record an LP in 1968. The resulting LP "Brian Jones presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka" was the first release on Rolling Stones Records in 1971. A small selection of her images from the Brian Jones Festival are available on The Master Musicians Myspace.

This June I brought copies of the magazine to the village and the day before the festival and on 4 June 2009, I presented Mallim Ali with a copy. In the below slide show you can see Mallim Ali looking at the magazine and I really like the photo I took of him with Jill's photo open on a magazine page with his full page portrait. Michael Pollock and his son Marlon were on the porch and Master Musicians Mohamed Mockshan and Radi El Kahil arrive and greet the Master. It is obvious in the photos the reverence that the Masters have for Mallim Ali. I always bring several tubes of prescription eye ointment for him as he has severe eye pain and discomfort. He always blesses me for this small gesture.
Mallim Ali Abdeslam El Attar and Frank Rynne discuss Brian Jones and the recording of Brian Jones presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka, (Rolling Stones records 1971) for Zac Assemakis's film on the Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival in Joujouka. 29 July 2008.

The day I left Joujouka in June he called me to one side and asked me where was the money gone from the Brian Jones recording and the other records he played on such as the Master Musicians of Jajouka record that Joel Rubiner put out in 1974 and Ornette Coleman's "Dancing in My Head" all of which have been reissue on Cd without any consultation with the Masters.

Sadly the answer is not a mystery as other posts on this blog have revealed. Cherie Nutting , her ex husband Bachir Attar and Joel Rubiner, who runs a successful business in New Mexico selling Moroccan leather, have the answers. Philip Glass's label Point Music reissued the Brian Jones LP in 1995 and no one thought to consult or include Mallim Ali or the other Masters and their families in the remuneration that ensued.

Elle est aussi visible dans la nouvelle revue en ligne Leucothéa, revue autour de l'oeuvre de Jean-Marie Straub et Danièle Huillet.
Voici le lien :
http://www.revue-leucothea.com/

Interzone report: May 2009

Accueil March-April 2009

Paul O'Donovan: “My Baobab Retreat House”

Hi all,

Blogs :

The blog Interzone news http://interzone-news.blogspot.com/ has been supressed during some days, probably because of an error from a robot. I thought it had definitely gone, but it came back after some days after I complained. In the meantime I had created another one, Interzone news’ blog at http://interzonenews.wordpress.com/ . I am keeping it as a mirror site.
I like the web pages preview on the links at WordPress.
If Zoners want to post their news directly on the blogs, I can add them to the page “authors”.

August: 12th anniversary of Interzone:

It’s been 12 years since this net is working !!! 12 years of monthly reports relating Zoners’ activitis included my own ones.
What shall we do for the occasion ?
I suggest a meeting on internet : the chat of Interzone forum is practical and can welcome a large numer of people without disconnecting. We can use other tools as Skype. Othger suggestions ? If some of you happend to be in France at this time, let me know here.

Interzone compilation :

I have finished to gather the tome of the Time of the Naguals which contains the articles. It is 237 pages thick. The contents is too big to be included in this page, so it’s on line at http://aubert.isa.googlepages.com/articlescontents.htm . It is in an OpenOffice writer file, which I can convert in pdf.
I suggest to send it in pdf through mail to all the zoners who have written in it, for free of course.

Twitter:

I have subscribed at twitter http://twitter.com/ You can follow me there at Izzy 23’s twitter, as well as shocker_TV (Foe) http://twitter.com/shocker_tv and Grazulis (Gary) http://twitter.com/grazulis .
Foe, Gary and I got in touch on the first day of Interzone on August 10th 1997, and we are still in touch, which is absolutely great !

Sites :

Changes to come in free providers :
Changes are going to happen soon in google pages and geocities :
- Googles pages system is going to become Google sites : this concerns the sites Interzone reports and Interzone Galleries. So the adresses will change, and visits to the googlepages.com URL will be redirected to the new sites by Google.
- Geocities :
Geocities new sites are no longer available and the existing sites will be closed later this year. This concerns the sites Interzone Academy , Interzone Library , Rédacteurs Reporters d’Interzone and BD d’Interzone , so a lot of existing pages, and remaking the sites somewhere else would be a real brainstorm due to their size.
A number of Zoners have sites in Geocities. What do you foresee for them ? Is it possible to migrate them to another free space ? Any tip welcome.

Yannig : come to see my web site :

I have just updated my web site and thought you might like to visit it. To view it you just have to click on the links below or copy them in your navigator

If you go to www.Existensis.com and go to Forum, you will see that I have created a specific forum for different things. Everyone is welcome. Let’s make things interesting again! Never mind Yahoo! Existensis.

Interzone members are welcome too. Izzy, contact me if you would like me to set up a forum specifically for you. I think the forum structure is much better than the yahoo groups structure but others may disagree.
